Defeating Emailed Hoaxes

Every year I receive hundreds of hoaxes in my email, most sent along by friends or family, sometimes even by colleagues, all of them well meaning.  Many talk about horribly damaging computer viruses that no antivirus can stop.  These are all false, created by someone who enjoys generating mass panic and hysteria.  In fact, very few forwarded warnings are legitimate.

Hoax writers prey on fear, and on the desire we all share to help protect those we care for.

BitDefender and Kaspersky, Norton and McAfee, which are worth it, which aren't

Question: Paul, I understand from reading PC World Magazine that the BitDefender and Kaspersky antivirus software are the world’s leaders.  Is this true, and if so, why?  I have only heard of them recently, and I had thought Norton and McAfee were pretty much the only choice to protect my PC.  Who are these newcomers and where do they come from?

Spyware Popups!

Question: Paul, I have been receiving popups for Win Antivirus Pro that tell me my computer is infected with spyware and no matter what I do, these popups keep on coming, even with a popup stopper installed.  I am very frustrated with the situation and ready to chuck the PC out the front door.  What can be done before I turn this late model technical wonder into a boat anchor?

Question: Paul, I am running out of harddisk (or harddrive, whichever is correct) space on my XP computer, and wondered what options are open to me?  I’m not ready to buy a new computer yet, and wondered what could be done inexpensively?
By the way, the message I am getting is “Low Disk Space”.

Manually updating BitDefender v10 from the command prompt

This article is what I would refer to as a specialized interest article, as most people who use the PC day to day would never feel the need to update BitDefender from a command prompt, especially given how it updates on its own, and how easy it is to update manually from the program itself.  There are, however, reasons to update from a command prompt, and for that handful of very technical people out there, here you go:
